The first several links of the Federation Transwarp Network open, making travel between planets much faster. This will revolutionize both commerce and cultural exchange.
The Romulan Empire once again descends into political instability as a high ranking military official known to oppose Praetor Taris, and his ship, are destroyed in an antimatter blast. The Senate moves to limit Taris’ power, while several military commanders declare their independence. The Klingons declare open war on the Gorn Hegemony. They, and their allies, the Orions, attack the Gorn. They also demand assistance from the Federation, as mandated by the Khitomer Accords. The Federation instead condemns their attack on the Gorn. In return, the Klingons withdraw from the Khitomer Accords.

The Klingon-Gorn peace talks are again marred by an assassination attempt, resulting in several deaths and more injuries. The explosive device used is tracked back to Toral, son of Duras.

Chancellor J’mpok reluctantly agrees to one more round of Federatiopn moderated peace talks between the Klingon Empire and the Gorn Hegemony. Meanwhile, the I.K.S. Kang reappears after a year of silence. Ja’rod now takes his mother’s name and leadership of the House of Duras. He declares support for J’mpok.
Yet more planets secede from the Romulan Empire, leaving Praetor Taris in a precarious position.

Nausicaan ships destroy three Klingon outposts in a surprise attack. The Klingons, of course, retaliate.
There is conflict, however, within the Klingon fleet, as Ja’rod, son of Lursa, leads a successful mutiny against the captain of the I.K.S. Klang and pursues an investigation of the Undine threat.
Meanwhile on Cardassia, the Detapa Council discovers that a minimum of 75 warships, that had survived the Dominion War, have gone missing.

Excerpt taken from the journals of Ja’rod, son of Torg:
… It was in the bar that I first realized I was being watched. It is no new experience to me. Thanks to my mother’s legacy, I have been spied upon many times. But I did not recognize either of the two warriors watching me. And they did not toast appropriately when my shipmate declared a drink in honor of the Empire. They were too cautious to be true Klingon warriors. I knew they would follow me when I left. So, when my shipmate decided to continue on to visit a widow he had grown fond of, I told him I would return to our room alone. The strangers followed me, as I suspected they would. I watched their shadows as I pretended to drunkenness. A third joined them.
I turned down an alley, one I knew had no outlet. I can only imagine their smug satisfaction as they believed they’d caught me. But I was more than ready for them.
I killed the two from the bar, and captured the other. Even now Captain Klor prepares to question him. Or it, I should say. Our Science Officer says that my prisoner is no Klingon, but a shapechanger…
